Paper Puppets
This puppetry series is based in the exploration of samskaras, or universal human behavior patterns that repeat throughout history, and using visual metaphor to analyze situations of conflict or struggle. This work began in 2010 through a dance collaboration with artist Lindsey Bailey and has grown into a model for using puppetry and stop motion animation to teach conflict resolution and mindfulness.
I have been awarded a two month artist’s residency in Kuantan, Malaysia, to study the three thousand year old global heritage artform of Wayang Kulit puppetry and respond to it with my own work. My own library of modern puppet archetypes will serve as technique demonstrations, a library of archetypal characters that students can choose from in the early stages of playing their stories and learning the animations.
